The commemoration of World War I has fostered reflections & debates both about the ways this historical event has impacted our civilization, and about the complexities of progress during the last century. The discussions are relevant not only for historians and social scientists, but also for intellectuals and scholars with various fields of expertise, as well as for all concerned citizens. This Humboldt Kolleg is meant to elevate and expand the discussions on the significance of World War I as a turning point in history, culture and science representing also a significant act of commemoration. It aims to open up new perspectives and interpretations, to achieve a more profound understanding of the influence and legacy of the Great War in a wide range of contexts and also to balance the review of global issues with insights coming from Central and Eastern Europe.
